Genoa Sports and Recreation Reserve gets $370,000 funding for improvements from East Gippsland Council and federal government
The Genoa community has long held the upgrade of the courts as a priority and worked hard to attract funding for the project.
Residents and visitors in Genoa will soon be able to enjoy community sport with East Gippsland Shire Council building new sports courts. Council is partnering with the Genoa Town Committee and Genoa Sports Club on the project. The $370,000 project involves council replacing the old tennis courts with new synthetic tennis courts. One court will also be overlaid with netball lines and a basketball key to create more sporting opportunities.
Big improvements to the courts will be done and to protect the court surfaces from possible damage from nearby trees, a root barrier treatment will be applied
Big improvements to the courts
Mayor Cr Mark Reeves said the courts will be a big improvement. "The tennis courts at the Genoa Sports and Recreation Reserve are the only community sporting facilities in Genoa. It is important for the council to provide ways to encourage people to be physically active."
"This new facility will also provide a chance for the community to gather together, which is beneficial for wellbeing and an important component of community recovery." Cr Mark Reeves said.
Upgrade project funding
The project is funded via:
- $185,000 grant from the Local Economic Recovery Program (a joint grant from the State and Commonwealth)
- $160,000 from the Commonwealth's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program$25,000 from the council
The project is expected to be finished by the end of June.
