Flood study of Morwell and surrounds funded $26,000 through federal Risk and Resilience Grants Program
A flood study of Morwell and surrounding areas will be undertaken thanks to Federal Government funding.
Local MP Darren Chester said Latrobe City Council had received $26,000 of funding through the Risk and Resilience Grants Program to give Morwell and surroundings a flood study to be more prepared from the impacts of natural disasters such as flooding.
Numerous organisations and individuals have contributed both time and valuable information to the Traralgon Flood Study that could help reduce the risks of flooding
Having up to date and relevant information
Mr Chester said, "We have seen the devastation a major flood can cause to our region in recent months, so it is important we are prepared and educated about possible risks for next time. The flood study will update flood levels and flood risk of Waterhole Creek and its associated tributaries within Morwell and surrounding areas."
"Having up to date and relevant information means that in times of heavy rains or possible flooding appropriate decisions and action can be taken by emergency services, residents and others. This information will improve our preparation as a region but also our resilience by highlighting any major issues and finding solutions." Mr Chester also said.
Reducing the risks
Latrobe City Council and the Victorian State Government have also contributed funding to the project. The Risk and Resilience Grants Program is part of the National Partnership Agreement on Disaster Risk Reduction, which aims to reduce the risk and impact of natural disasters in line with the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework.
