Murray Street and Biggs Drive intersection upgrade gets $650,000 funding from Blackspot Program 2021/22 and Growing Suburbs Fund
Bass Coast Shire Council is continuing to Unlock Opportunities in Wonthaggi, with significant pedestrian safety upgrade works on the intersection of Murray Street and Biggs Drive about to get underway.
Construction will begin this week and is expected to take around two months to complete, subject to favourable weather, contractor and supplier availability and any potential COVID-19 impacts. This $650,000 project is being carried out as a part of council's Wonthaggi, Opportunity Unlocked initiative and is funded through the federal government's Blackspot Program 2021/22 and the state government's Growing Suburbs Fund.
As part of the project, a traffic island will be built along the centre line of Biggs Drive/Billson Street, changing the traffic movements from Murray Street to left-in and left-out only
Safer pedestrian access
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan said that the Wonthaggi Activity Centre Plan and Access and Movement Study identified opportunities for increased safe pedestrian access.
"By upgrading the crossing points at the Billson Street, Murray Street and Biggs Drive intersection, this project aims to improve access and safety for all pedestrians," Cr Whelan said.
This island will also allow pedestrians to safely wait in the centre of the road for traffic to pass. Street lighting at this intersection will also be improved. During construction, road users and pedestrians can expect significantly changed traffic conditions, including road closures. Road users and pedestrians are encouraged to seek alternate routes during these periods. Some car parks on Murray Street and Biggs Drive will not be available during these works.
Disruptions due to constructions
These works will include the use of large plants and machinery and might be noisy at times. Council understands that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby residents and businesses and appreciates their patience. The contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction.
