Residents reminded to get permit to use fire in open air during Fire Danger Period in Latrobe City from Country Fire Authority
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) declared the Fire Danger Period will commence in Latrobe City on 16 January.
Fire Danger Period will commence in Latrobe City on Monday 16 January from 1.00am. If property owners wish to burn in open air, a written permit from the CFA will be required. Those wishing to request a permit can visit the Fire Permits Victoria page or call the CFA on 1800 668 511.
If you need to use fire in the open air during the Fire Danger Period or on a day of Total Fire Ban you may require a permit from the Country Fire Authority (CFA)
Planning and preparing
Residents are reminded that burning is not the only way to reduce fuel loads around their property and are encouraged to use their green waste bins and local green waste facilities.
Other ways to help prepare your property during the fire season include:
- Keep grass cut to less than 10 centimetres
- Keep gutters clear of leaf litter
- Remove flammable items from decks and verandas
- Keep wood piles away from the house
- Cut back overhanging branches
- Prune shrubs well away from tree branches
- Remove dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark
It is best to be prepared and have a plan during the fire danger period, not just for you and your family, but also for your pets or livestock. Develop a bushfire plan for your animals. Prepare your property. Identify safer areas for your animals. Having a plan for your pets or livestock means they will be happier and safer when an emergency hits.
Prioritise safety measures
Mayor of Latrobe City, Councillor Kellie O'Callaghan said it was vital that everyone ensure their properties are prepared. "Despite the cooler temperatures and increased rain over recent months it is essential that we all ensure we are prepared for fire, particularly following the announcement of the fire danger period.
"Unfortunately, many of our local communities know first-hand the impact fire can have. This is an important time to ensure we are all looking out for one another and prioritising measures that keep us and our properties safe," said the Mayor.
